The use of Probiotics : Myth or Realty ?
(The answer to the question) by Gaétan Simard
For the novice, the use of probiotics could seem to be superfluous or even of an esoteric nature. The reality is quite different.
The use of probiotics is currently taking place on a large scale in the food industry, with impressive results. Studies continue to reveal the multiple benefits associated with the use of these micro-organisms.
Probiotics are not new, and their first use goes back several hundred years. With only a little knowledge, people from the country nowadays known as Bulgaria, used to use fermented milk as a food supplement which increased their life expectancy.
The first researcher to become involved in the field of probiotics was a certain Ilya Mechnikov (father of immunology) who conducted various studies and, at the turn of the century, isolated the first strain of probiotic bacterium (Lactobacillus Bulgaricus, known today as Lactobacillus delbrueckii ssp). |
Stockbreeders of thoroughbred pigeons have long known that the use of powdered dried droppings, sprinkled onto the nests before the reproductive period, improves the survival rate of chicks about to be born. This practice can certainly only be described as the use of probiotics. Although this is an acceptable method, it is likely also to introduce pathogenic bacteria.
The use of probiotics on farm animals dates back to the Seventies, but its use only increased following positive results obtained since that time.
Recently, the Laval University in Québec renovated the former farm building (located behind Place Sainte-Foy) to accommodate the newly established I.N.A.F. (Institute of Neutraceutics and Functional Foods) dedicated to the study of neutraceutics (of which probiotics is one) and the prevention of chronic diseases.
Armand Frappier works in the Institute in Montreal. Companies manufacturing lactic yeasts are booming. Probiotics are increasingly found in farm animals’ feed and even food for humans. This growth is definitely connected to increasing awareness of the problems caused by the use of antibiotics.
The latter, largely used in animal feed to prevent infections, have triggered the evolution of bacteria into increasingly resistant strains. However, the use of probiotics is not only curative. It is a natural way to give your pets a food supplement that not only protects them from infections, but also tremendously enhances their health and bodily strength.
Probiotics assist in the absorption of all nutrients contained in foods, and by so doing, for the user, this results in a greatly improved quality of life for his or her pets. If you are still wondering about probiotics, doing a simple search on the Internet will definitely convince you of the benefits which derive from their use.
Using probiotics is the modern way to give your pets the best guarantee of good health. |
