When we created Probiavi for birds, our main objective was to reduce or eliminate early mortality of chicks, and... we succeeded !

Probiotics are products (living organisms) which help in the development of micro-organisms (bacteria) rather than destroying them.

Any serious stockbreeder or bird-owner will adequately house his bird and provide him with a variety of foods as well as clean water. Droppings can, on occasion, soil the water. But by changing the latter regularly, one hopes that when the bird drinks from this pathogenic culture of bacteria, its body is sufficiently strong to fight the invasion. This is what actually happens in most cases.

But what if this is not the case?

The bird will suffer from gastritis. It will have liquid droppings over a period of a few days and, if it has sufficient reserves, it will survive. Sometimes, the owner might not realize the problem, because birds have a way of hiding their discomfort. When the bird mopes in the back of the cage, it is often, by then, too late. It no longer has the strength to hide its illness. In nature, this is the signal that the bird is preparing to die...

Firstly, they are manufactured in such a way that the bird can assimilate all the nutrients in its food. By maintaining the bird’s digestive system in an optimal condition, one can ensure that the care taken to give the bird quality food is combined with its ability to absorb and convert that food into vitamins, minerals and proteins essential to its good health.

Moreover, the addition of probiotics to its food ensures the constant existence of good bacteria such as Lactobacillus acidophilus in its digestive system. This permanent presence results in good bacteria colonizing most of the areas available in the bird’s digestive tract.

Finally, a healthy digestive system creates a relatively acid environment which prevents the colonization of pathogenic bacteria. The use of probiotics is particularly beneficial when breeding chicks.

The intestinal bacteriological flora of the chicks is colonized by his/ her parents at the time of feeding. By adding PROBIAVI to a breeding pâté, surprising results can be obtained. The young birds grow more quickly and are more easily and swiftly weaned. In the case of young canaries, the mortality syndrome due to severe weight loss (‘going light’) disappears completely.

The benefits of probiotics need no further demonstration — a simple Internet search proves this. However, it is vital that the products purchased are of good quality, and this is not always easy to ascertain. There are some suppliers selling probiotics that are, according to them, “good for all pets.” Others sell them in liquid form and store them at room temperature thus reducing the vitality of the product. What should be emphasized is that, for probiotics to be effective, they must contain living organisms and be stored in a refrigerator, or better still, in a freezer. What is more, the organisms contained in the probiotics for birds, must be organisms specific to birds. One cannot administer yogurt capsules designed for human beings and claim that this would be beneficial for birds !
